IGCSE offers subjects like Psychology and Global Perspectives that CBSE schools don’t

IGCSE's subject flexibility lets students studying under the curriculum choose from options like Psychology and Environmental Management that aren't typically offered under CBSE.

A child who enjoys biology, loves coding and is equally interested in economics can struggle to fit neatly into a fixed stream under India’s traditional school boards. IGCSE, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education, is built to offer schools much greater subject flexibility instead.

Along with traditional subjects like maths, science, languages and social sciences, many IGCSE schools also offer Business Studies, Psychology, Environmental Management, Global Perspectives, Design and Technology, Computer Science and more, depending on what each school makes available. That range matters for students who don’t fit neatly into “science student” or “commerce student” categories under CBSE or ICSE.

The curriculum is followed in schools across more than 160 countries, and the number of schools offering Cambridge programmes has been steadily growing in Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Assessment is also more varied than in traditional Indian boards: exams count for 60 percent of the grade, coursework for 25 percent and practicals for 15 percent, spreading risk across the year rather than resting on a single high-stakes exam.

That flexibility comes with a cost, though — IGCSE schools in cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru charge annual fees ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 14 lakh depending on the grade and facilities, making them among the priciest schooling options in the country.
